"Everyone is somebody's weirdo."
Scott Adams, The Dilbert Principle
We have all heard someone (usually our parents) saying to us "why can't you act normally?" when we were growing up. Some of us heard that question directed at ourselves more often than others. At any moment, we are judged by others on whether we are normal.
So what is the definition of a normal person? If one asks ten people this question, one will likely get ten different answers. Some would say that being normal is to adhere to the rules of the society; some others would say someone is normal if one does not stand out from the crowd; someone else may say that a normal person is someone who has a stable mind or someone who is not eccentric.
The definition of a normal person is often very subjective because most of us use ourselves as the standard in determining whether people around us are normal. Since everyone has a slightly different idea of what a normal person is, it is certain that a person is considered normal by some while others may consider the same person to be an odd person. The only difference is the number of people who consider one person to be normal (I guess the set of people who consider me normal is smaller than normal).
We all make (subconscious) judgements on whether people around us are normal. Unfortunately, many of us are not very good at that, even when it comes to people we think we know well — there are people who appear to be normal to the public and turn out to be anything but. For example, there are psychopaths and criminals who have the capacity to commit acts that are considered abnormal by almost everyone and have no remorse for what they do, yet they are able to appear normal to the people who (appear to) know them.
At the same time, many discoveries were made by people who are not widely regarded as normal (at the time, at least). Many, such as Galileo, Newton, Einstein, have come up with ideas and theories that were considered ridiculous at the time they were released, yet they were proven to be true later on. Even today, many technological breakthroughs and creative ideas in games, books were conceived in the minds that may not be normal. In this case, being normal can be regarded as a negative, synonymous with being mediocre.
Perhaps I am a little abnormal merely for thinking about whether I am normal from time to time. However, if we don't think about what we do, we have no way of knowing in which area we can change to make ourselves better. It is perfectly normal for us to work on improving ourselves, since that is what others expect from us.
