What should I give for His/Her Birthday?
Every year, at a particular time, one question rises up and haunts me (I'm sure I am not the only one) — "what to give for his/her birthday?" Usually I spend hours, maybe even days, trying to come up with an idea that would make the recipient (and my wallet) happy. The task is even harder when the birthday boy/girl is someone whom I consider to have everything (according to my family, I am one of these people).
Giving a birthday card seems like an economic solution, but there may be a chance I would write the exact same words on the Christmas card. No, a card is out of the question.
If I am not going to send a birthday card, how can I show the birthday boy/girl that I care about him/her? Maybe what I should do is to give him/her a gift that has some links with the number of birthdays he/she has celebrated (a nicer way of saying his/her age). The following list contains some (irreverant) suggestions on what to buy for someone celebrating a particular birthday. I will try to make the list as age appropriate as possible (here I assume that price is not an obstacle).
- 1: slide whistle (it looks like 1),
a giant-sized glove that has "#1" written on it
- 2: one pair of shoes or gloves, two Thundersticks (you can't make any noise with just one)
- 3: tricycle, triangle (the musical instrument), 3-D glasses (do they still exist?), toy trumpet (since it has 3 keys)
- 4: 4-sided kite, a showcase of the "original" 4 elements (NO touching)
- 5: starfish (does not have to be a live one),
- 6: Chinese checkers (since the board is a 6-point star), toy guitar (with 6 strings)
- 8: octupus (make sure that it has no ink left), Mobius strip, stop sign (home-made, NOT government-made)
- 9: working model of the solar system (or should I save it for his/her 10th birthday, since there may be 10 planets now?)
- 10: Yo-Yo (the string and the yo-yo looks like 10 written veritcally), 10-speed bicycle
- 11: foosball table (since each team has 11 players)
- 12: dodecahedron (12-sided regular solid) calendar, set of Chinese zodiac creatures
- 13: a book about Paraskevidekatriaphobia — Fear of Friday the 13th
- 14: enrolment in a 14-day survival camp
- 15: a guide on maximizing the impact of his/her 15 minutes of fame (LEGALLY)
- 16: 16 hours of driver's training (only applicable in North America)
- 18: 18-wheeler (only if he/she is eligible to drive such a vehicle)
- 21: T-shirt/sweater with Black Jacks (21 points) on it, a book about the 21st century
- 24: DVD of the TV series 24, a 24-pack of his/her favourite beverage
- 25: quart (1/4 gallon) of lager(why have a pint when you can have a quart?), a quarterstaff
- 27: Rubik's cube (it is made of 27 parts, and he/she is old enough to remember the Rubik's cube craze)
- 32: 32-bit gaming system (for example, PS1, Sega Saturn)
- 33: enrolment in a Russian
language course
(there are 33 letters in the Russian/Cyrillic alphabet)
- 35: 35mm camera lens
- 36: yardstick (1 yard = 36 inches)
- 40: a set of Monopoly game (there are 40 spaces on the game board, and it may be the only way the recipient can strike it rich)
- 42: The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams (since 42 is the answer to everything)
- 45: compass (since major markings on a compass are 45 degrees apart. Also, this may be a time when one ponders on which direction one should take for the rest of one's life)
- 50: a rare
50 cent piece (if the currency of the country
the recipient resides in has a lower unit value, a 50 unit coin)
- 52: deck of playing cards (there are 52 cards, if you don't count the joker and the "extra" cards)
- 55: a car that cannot go faster than 55 (miles per hour)
- 60: a watch (also suitable for people celebrating their 12th, 15th, 24th, or 30th birthdays)
- 64: chess set (since the board has 64 spaces) (also suitable for someone celebrating his/her 16th or 32nd birthday, since each side has 16 pieces)
- 66.5: a trip to the Arctic (or Antarctic) Circle (the circles are at latitudes of 66.5 degrees N/S, respectively)
- 72: 72-inch (or 72-centimetre if 72 inches is too high) statuette
- 75: 75cL (or 750mL) bottle of wine
- 80: an 80-day around-the-world journey (like the one taken by Phileas Fogg and Michael Palin)
- 82: dartboard and magnetic darts — the board has 82 coloured areas (not counting the outermost black area) (the darts have to manetic, or the darts may cause serious harm to walls and bystanders)
- 88: piano (since it has 88 keys on the keyboard)
- 90: plane trip over the North and/or South Poles
- 100: model of a Roman centurian
- 108: a deck of UNO (this deck contains 108 cards)
The above are just suggestions and I know that there are a lot of (age) omissions. Also, some of the suggestions on the list are impractical, hard to find, expensive, or just plain silly. I guess I am really doing is to (perhaps) ease the agony of searching for a birthday gift in the future.
